From Validation Burden to Competitive Capacity: Operationalizing FDA Computer Software Assurance

Overview
Computer Software Assurance (CSA) provides a risk-based approach to establishing confidence in software used in production and quality systems. FDA guidance focuses assurance activities on intended use and the potential consequences of software failure, allowing organizations to apply greater testing rigor to higher-risk functions while reducing unnecessary documentation for lower-risk functions. The approach works alongside existing requirements and frameworks, including 21 CFR Part 11, the Quality Management System Regulation, ISO 13485:2016, and GAMP 5.
Implementing Computer Software Assurance requires organizations to evaluate current Computer System Validation practices, establish credible risk assessment methods, revise procedures and templates, train validation and quality teams, and strengthen oversight of vendors and modern technologies. The FDA guidance also addresses cloud computing, automation, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning when these technologies are used as part of production or the quality system.
